This elegantly carved egg holder is worthy of display on a kitchen counter, with or without eggs. Useful and beautiful, its simple aesthetic and daily functionality using natural materials and craftsmanship speaks to the nkuku ethos. We love using mango wood in our designs for its tactility, and for the natural variations in the grain that bring added interest to a piece. The contrast of the wood against the aged iron handles adds an industrial touch.
The mango wood we use is a by-product of mango farming. Mango trees are initially grown for their fruit, and harvested over a number of years, then once the trees have stopped bearing fruit, they are cut down to allow farmers to plant more trees. Selling the waste material also provides the farmers with a supplementary income.
To care for your mango wood, wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry immediately. To nourish and protect the natural wood rub an edible oil such as olive oil or walnut oil into the surface with a cloth. Please note adding oil may darken the tone of the wood. Due to the natural beauty of these items there may be changes to the colour over time.
