Meet Claire, Nkuku’s Interior Designer

16th June 2025

We sat down with our Interior Designer to discover her design philosophy, key influences, and expert advice to inspire your next project.

What first sparked your interest in interiors?

It all started in my teenage years, back in the 1980s. I was obsessed with having the coolest room, not to show off to anyone, but just for myself. Creating a space that felt entirely mine was thrilling even then.

What song would play during your design process?

It would have to be All I Need by Air. It’s calm, collected, and easy listening. That’s exactly how I want the design process to feel: easy, intuitive, and comfortable.

How do you begin working with a new client?

I start by getting to know them completely. I want to understand their needs, their aspirations, and the vision they hold for their home or space. That connection is essential.

What does conscious design mean to you?

It’s about being mindful of where and how we source our products. That conversation with the client is so important. I love working with natural materials like wood, stone, and metal, and combining them in beautiful ways. Wood, especially reclaimed timber, is a favourite. It’s not just sustainable, it’s full of character and warmth.

Do you think interiors affect wellbeing?

Absolutely. Your home should be a sanctuary, somewhere you feel calm the moment you walk in. I try to create spaces that are serene and welcoming. For me, home is both a happy and safe place and a canvas for personal expression.

What are your top tips for transforming a space on a budget?

Lighting is always the best place to start. It can transform the atmosphere of a room instantly. Then look at soft furnishings. In winter, opt for velvets and rich textures. In spring or summer, swap them for lighter linens. Small changes can make a big impact.

How can someone refresh furniture rather than replace it?

Be brave. Painting a piece can completely change its feel. Or try accessorising by adding new handles, displaying decorative objects, or re-styling shelves. For example, if a bookcase feels tired, remove some of the books and mix in sculptural or handmade pieces to elevate it.

What do you love most about being Nkuku’s interior designer?

I love working with Nkuku because the pieces are timeless. They’re beautifully designed with a touch of trend, but never trend-led. Each piece tells a story, and no two are identical. That handcrafted quality and knowing it’s made by skilled makers is something really special.

And finally, if your design style were a cocktail...?

A dry martini. Elegant, sophisticated, with just the right twist.
